Which back protector suits my needs

Which Back Protector?

There are a few different types of back protection systems available all with their own benefits and disadvantages.

Types of Back Protectors

Motorcycle Spine Protector

A spine protector will span the full length of the riders back, offering protection for both the upper and lower back area. Usually made of interlocked safety plates, these back protectors offer the best type of security against spinal damage caused during a collision. Back protectors look pretty stylish but can be worn discreetly under and outer garment.

Back protection that straps directly to your body, and is independent from the jacket, offers several benefits. It most often features a longer protective profile which spans virtually the full spine. This can be a life saver in certain accidents. Strapped on protectors also don't move around within the available room supplied for a standard foam padding insert.

Lumbar Protectors

Lumbar protectors offer support to the lower part of the back and spine. They are often recommended for motorcyclists to maintain correct position while riding, and to protect from futher injury for those who already suffer from lower back pain.

LBP is caused by poor seating position and lack of support, the inherent difficulty with motorcycle seats is the absence of lower back lumbar support. Seats that do not accommodate the size and shape of the buttocks will force the rider into a poor sitting posture.

Body Armour

Body Armour is more specifically designed for off-road racing and motocross sports. Body Armour usually has arm and shoulder protectors as well as front and back protection plates. It is suited for the more active bike enthusiast who ride of uneven surfaces, make jumps or anything more likely to result in them becoming unseated.

If you're a biker looking for peace of mind and and protection against injury we highly recommend a full spine protector to kepp you safe on the roads. The back protection built in to some suits and jackets is not sufficient to protect yourself from a serious injury.
